Kojarena Defence Signals Intelligence Station

Kojarena, established east of Geraldton in 1993, is part of ECHELON, a US signals intelligence and analysis network. Its four dishes intercept communications from regional satellites over Asia and from international communication satellites throughout the Indian Ocean and South-East regions. An expansion announced in February 2007 will include the new Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) facility leading to a more active role for Kojarena.

MUOS is a new geosynchronous communications satellite network designed to replace US Navy UHF F/O (UFO) satellites constellation. The first MUOS satellite is scheduled for launch in 2010.

The MUOS constellation will provide UHF secure voice, data, video, network-centric communications in real-time to US mobile warfighters through 2030 and will be fully interoperable with the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) and current radio systems. The system will be fully compatible with UFO system and legacy terminals. The data transmission rate would be approximately 40 Mbps. Users will be able to access a 64 Kb per second beyond the line-of-sight communication services.
